Tours with trained volunteers
Booked group tours are available throughout the year starting at any time from 10 am to 3 pm. Tours normally last between 60 and 90 minutes.
In addition to our 'Introduction to the Botanic Garden' tour, two subject tours are also offered: ‘The History of the Botanic Garden’; and ‘Introduction to the Harcourt Arboretum’.
Introduction to the Botanic Garden: this tour shows visitors the layout and structure of the Garden and glasshouses, the plant collections, the important developments made recently and the new Herbarium Room.
History of the Botanic Garden: this tour explains how the garden has evolved over nearly 400 years. Guides will introduce some of the more important characters involved and many of the changes made to the Garden during this period.
Introduction to Harcourt Arboretum: this tour guides visitors around the historic Arboretum at Nuneham Courtenay. It covers the history, the major tree collections and the management of the woodlands and meadows.
Tours with our staff
General and special subject tours led by horticultural staff can be booked on weekdays, depending on availability. Tours led by the Director or the Curators, and tours in the evenings are also available upon application.
All group tours should be booked at least three weeks in advance. A non-refundable deposit for the minimum charge will be taken at the time of booking to secure your booking. The normal group size is 10-15, but larger groups can be accommodated, in which two or more guides lead separate parties.
