Join us at the Oxford Botanic Garden for a relaxed and engaging tasting exploring the past and present of South African wine.
South Africa has one of the oldest wine traditions outside Europe, with vines first planted in the Cape in the 17th century. Since then, the country has developed a rich and distinctive wine culture, shaped by its unique landscapes, diverse grape varieties, and a new generation of innovative winemakers.
Dr Andrew Wood will take us on a guided tasting that will explore a range of wines which tell the story of South African viticulture — from the earliest grape varieties planted in the Cape to the country’s most famous modern styles. Along the way we’ll look at how climate, geography, and history have influenced the wines produced there, and how South African producers today are redefining the region on the global stage.
Set within the beautiful surroundings of the Botanic Garden, this tasting offers a friendly introduction to one of the wine world’s most dynamic and exciting regions.
